Advice for simple chicken wire fence?

1. Plan Your Layout

Measure the area you want to enclose and mark the corners with stakes.

Decide on the fence height—at least 4 to 6 feet is ideal to keep chickens in and predators out.

2. Choose Materials

Chicken wire: Standard 1-inch mesh works well.

Posts: Use wooden or metal T-posts spaced about 6–8 feet apart.

Fasteners: Get staples, wire ties, or fencing clips to secure the wire.

3. Install the Posts

Dig post holes about 1–2 feet deep for stability.

Set the corner posts first, making sure they’re level and sturdy.

Fill holes with soil or concrete to hold them firm.

4. Attach the Wire

Unroll the chicken wire along the posts.

Start at a corner post and staple or tie the wire tightly.

Pull the wire taut as you move along to prevent sagging.

5. Secure the Bottom

Bury or bend the base: Either bury the bottom 6–12 inches or bend it outward and cover with rocks or soil to stop predators from digging underneath.

6. Add a Gate

Install a simple wooden or metal frame gate with a secure latch for easy access.

7. Regular Maintenance

Check for holes, loose staples, or rust every few weeks.

Tighten or replace sections as needed to keep the fence strong.

Tip: If predators like raccoons or foxes are common, consider adding a second layer of hardware cloth near the bottom or an electric wire for extra protection.
