When considering a new vertical form fill seal machine purchase or assessing your current equipment, understanding sanitation, maintenance, and reliability aspects is invaluable. To facilitate this evaluation, here are:
1. Inspect for design characteristics that eliminate puddling, stagnant water, or product accumulation. Are there surface areas on top of the machine where liquids or product can gather? Are there jagged edges leading to product accumulation? The X-Series vertical form fill seal machines feature sanitary design elements, such as cross members oriented at 90° and smooth, finished edges. These factors promote water and product drainage while simplifying cleaning tasks. 2. Steer clear of crevices or 'sandwiched' metal. Cleaning between submerged surfaces is impossible. Therefore, a welded frame is considerably more sanitary than a bolted frame. Our welds boast an open radius, ground smooth, ensuring a cleanable surface without difficult-to-reach crevices, ribbing, or pits. If there is sandwich metal on our machines, food-grade silicone is utilized as a sanitary gasket during assembly.
3. What advantages does electro-polished stainless steel offer? On the X-Series vertical form fill seal machines, all stainless steel components undergo electro-polishing. This 'super passivation' technique begins with an acid wash to eliminate impurities, subsequently raising the nickel content to the surface, which smoothens the surface for easier cleaning. This process also diminishes the opportunity for bacterial accumulation.
4. Limit the use of aluminum. Ensure aluminum does not come in contact with your product and is only used when absolutely necessary. Aluminum components on our X-Series VFFS baggers are minimal, and any utilized aluminum is anodized or treated to meet or exceed 3-A standards, making it resilient against cleaning agents.
5. Ensure easy access not only from the top of the machine but also underneath. The lowest cross member on our 3-A-certified baggers stands 6" off the ground, enabling straightforward accessibility for cleaning beneath the vertical form fill seal machine.

6. Can you perform a quick visual assessment of the machine? Remember, if you cannot see it, you cannot clean it. Our machines facilitate prompt visual inspections without the need to detach covers. Wires and cables are loosely routed, preventing entrapment, which simplifies cleaning and inspection. Even the control box is designed to pivot for easy access to both sides of the machine. With such accessible designs, high-pressure water is unnecessary for cleaning hard-to-reach sections, as it merely scatters debris around.
7. Ensure sealing jaws and back seal components can be removed effortlessly for cleaning. Our forming tube, sealing jaws, and back seal components can be detached quickly without needing tools, simplifying cleaning. Even code dater assemblies can be taken out easily for off-line cleaning with just four bolts. Sanitary design is undoubtedly an investment worth making.

9. Always verify all certifications. It’s crucial to know that not all claimed 3-A certifications are valid, making it imperative to adhere to the principle of 'trust but verify.' The 3-A organization regularly shares lists of companies that promote counterfeit 3-A certs (Click here for this list).
10. Above all, understand that sanitary design represents a beneficial investment. It minimizes control points, reduces cleaning time, and lowers the likelihood of product recalls, as well as the risk of serious illnesses and fatalities.
